The practice of law is clearly a left brained activity, however, I have always enjoyed the opportunity to dabble in right brained activities, such as creativity in the arts.  When my daughters, Jody and Annie, were younger we took ceramics classes together which we enjoyed greatly. But these opportunities were relatively few and far between, and by and large, I was relegated to my left brained lawyerly duties.

In the spring of 2015, I vacationed on the Big Island of Hawaii.  We wandered into a local tie dye shop with racks filled with colorful T-shirts.  I found the owner, an older hippy looking fellow, in the rear of the shop who was in the process of dyeing more items for his shop. I watched and asked questions as he tied shirts and dyed.

Tie dying looked like a fun and relatively safe hobby.  “The worst tie dye is just a bad looking shirt,” I said, “when in my law practice mistakes can be costly and devastating”. I returned home to Arizona and bought a small tie dye kit at Michaels. That kit tie dyed maybe two shirts, so I soon bought a few more. But soon enough, I was searching for dyes on websites that came in larger stock and made my way to what has become my principal supplier, Dharma Trading Co.

After hours spent learning the chemistry of dying, studying websites and You Tube videos to learn differing folding techniques, I’m still learning every day. Which is something I love about this process. I have also found over time that thrift stores have hundreds, even thousands of items for tie dye.  By using thrift store items, there is always a great variety and sizing options. Equally important, using thrift store product allows for refurbishing of clothing and gives them new life and purpose.

I am a lawyer 9-5, and tie dyer during pretty much all the hours in between. I was encouraged to investigate and the more I stewed, the more intrigued I became with the idea of setting up a way to sell my projects and create for & with fellow tie dye lovers.

So I am giving it a shot! Thanks for your support : )
